Wow, that wasn’t easy.. Thought it should take several minutes to bind an iso file using ILOM to boot and install a fresh copy of Solaris…
Well, first thing I ran into was network firewalling. My host resides in a different network/subnet than the host containing the ISO. Therefor it was necessary to allow some network ports to get the redirection software started:
SP Network Ports
5120 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: CD
5121 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Keyboard and Mouse
5123 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Diskette
5555 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Encryption
5556 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Authentication
6481 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Servicetag Daemon
7578 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Video
7579 TCP Oracle ILOM Remote Console: Serial
The second thing I ran into was java. After launching the Redirection service and trying to start redirecting an ISO the java applet complained about 64bit java. This applet needs 32bit to be able to function. So I went to the java site and downloaded the 32bit version. After unpacking it I relaunched the Remote Console applet and told my browser to use the javaws binary from the just downloaded 32bit version. Of course this brought me to the third item…
And the third item is about the security settings within java. They are by default to tight to allow remote applications to run. Solution for this issue was to run the binary ./bin/ControlPanel and to set the security level to the lowest possible.
And finally I was able to start the Remote Console applet and things start working as I expected. It only took several hours to get it working instead of several minutes.
Anyway, when it is working it works like a charm. The connection is robust and I could install my fresh Solaris copy without any hassle.
